There is a habit among some of us to pity others who are less fortunate than us and we would try to help them in one way or another. However, if you look at it from a different angle, you will find that by pitying other people, you are literally insulting them. You will only pity others if you really find them in a miserable state, so by pitying them, you are actually saying that they are very unfortunate and in a state entirely different from a normal person.
This type of 'attention' gives them a feeling that they are in a way 'handicapped' and require a lot of care. Due to the pride of humans, nobody will want to receive care and attention and definitely nobody will want to think themselves as a handicapped. Everyone wants to think themselves superior to others and not inferior.
So, nobody wants to be pitied unless he is really so pathetic and miserable.

Shawn, I disagree with your post. Although its true that when somebody pities you, they think you are in a more miserable state than him, but in my P.O.V, i would not say he insulted the guy he pitied so unless the 'insulted' guy wants to compare himself with somebody else, he would not feel insulted. One should be content with what he has, or strive to improve himself, no matter what happens around him. If somebody pities him, just let him pity. I will go my own way. Isn't that so? Do you agree Shawn?
